Gates
William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955. His name has come to be a legend, referring from his extreme wealth to his extreme intelligence.
In eighth grade he wrote his first computer program which was a game of Tic-Tac-Toe played against a computer. Later as he got more familiar with the OS he was writing in he and some friends figured out how to change the parameters that limited the amount of computer time they were allowed to use.
His academics also excelled. He scored a 1590 on the SAT and was admitted to Harvard in 1973. However, with the release of MITS Altair 8800 which was based around the Intel 8080 CPU, he decided to drop out of school and start a software company with his high school friend Paul Allen. Thus Mircrosoft was born.
His company has changed the way we look at computing. Together with IBM, they managed to bring the computer into the mainstream of business, securing Microsoft's long term hold on the PC market. Microsoft and IBM virtually took over the business market for computers in the mid-to-late 80's. Currently Microsoft's multiple operating systems (Windows XP/Vista/7/etc.) hold approximately 90% of the market share of all computers according to various surveys.
Five percent of that market share is held by Microsoft's biggest competitor Apple. One of Apple's biggest marketing campaigns railed windows. But in 1984 (one year before the release of windows), Gates praises the development of the Macintosh at a conference saying, "To create a new standard, it takes something that's not just a little bit different; it takes something that's really new and really captures people's imagination — and the Macintosh, of all the machines I've ever seen, is the only one that meets that standard." Bill Gates currently resides as the Co-Founder and Chairman of Microsoft, Co-Chair of the Bill & Mielinda Gates Foundation, CEO of Cascade Investment and Chairman of Corbis. He is an avid philanthropist. He and his wife have already donated 28 Billion dollars and they have plans to give 95% of their wealth away to charity. Speaking of wealth, Bill Gates is one of the richest men in the world. His current net worth, according to Forbes Magazine, is 66 Billion dollars ($66,000,000,000.00). The main focus of these efforts are in improving education in America and improving healthcare and reducing poverty around the globe.
